Week 3/4 Prompt: Tell Us About Your Topic

We starting discussing paper topics at the end of last week's meeting.  Now that you have had a week to think about what you might want to write, tell us a bit more about it.  Specifically, tell us:
  • What do you intend to argue?  Be very specific.
  • What is some preliminary evidence?  How are you going to back up your claims?
  • Where are going to find your evidence?  How do you know you can trust the sources?\
Please share your ideas and comment on the posts of your classmates.  Please make this post some time between now and our 2/19 meeting.

  1. My argument is going to be how addiction is a disease . Why and how plus the sings of addiction is what I will be proving . I work around and sometimes with people with addiction everyday. Addiction is stated to be a mental and emotional dependency. There are a lot of types of addiction but they all revolve around the same actions . I am going to prove my claims threw research , statistics and surveys . I am going to find a lot of evidence at my jobs such as doctors , books and therapists . There is also government sites with a lot of usueful information that can be trusted . The information from my job can be trusted because they Pratice what they preach . Doctors therapists nurses and so on are licensed to deal with people that have addiction.

    1. This sounds like a very interesting topic. We will want to talk about how you know information can be "trusted"...we will talk about that tonight. Why does the designation of addiction as a disease matter? I have a hunch that it matters quite a bit for a lot of reasons.

  2. My argument is about immigration reform. Specifically, why the "Dreamers" should get permanent resident statuses here in the US. Some of these kids come in to the US at a really young age. They do not know what is going on at the time. Some of the Dreamers didn't even know they were illegal until they applied for college or tried to get married and other things. They have never been to their country and some do not know the language. Many of them have become very successful here and are leaders in their communities. I intend on researching immigration laws from our past and try to connect them with our present laws. I will also gather information on specific Dreamers and their positive contributions to society. I will make sure I check on their credentials to make sure they are a trusted source. When looking up the laws, I will make sure to go to the library and use reliable books and not rely solely on the internet. I still have much things to think about on this matter and will most likely change some things along the way.

    1. This is an excellent topic. Let's working on fine tuning exactly what you plan to write. This will help streamline the research a bit. If you argument is that Dreamers should immediately get PR status- that will lead you down an entirely different path than a critique of immigration law. This is an important topic- excellent choice.

  3. I plan on writing my paper on sexual education reform in schools. In recent times it is coming to light an unfortunately astounding amount of men and women have been sexually assaulted. A prime public example is the case of Aziz Ainsari, amongst many others. My paper will focus that schools should not only be more in depth on the topics they cover, but they should focus largely on consent and what constitutes rape and sexual assault. A Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll reports almost half of college students do not know the definition of consent and the consequences of not acquiring consent. Some of my sources include Planned Parenthood and RAINN (The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network).

  5. The topic that I am choosing is how a slot machine and a cell phone are so similar, basically talking about how/why most people are really into their phones and how it causes them to be distracted and not be able to see whats in front of them.
