Understanding How You Learn and....Why does it matter?

The reading for this week brought the belief in "learning styles" into question.  What do you think?  Please explain your answer with examples from the reading.  Do you have a particular learning style?  Please explain.

Finally, how have you adapted your ways of reading and preparing for tests in college?
  1. Do you believe that there is a way you learn best?
  2. How have you adapted when you have had a "mismatch" with a professor's instructional style.
Please post or email your responses by Wednesday of this week.

  2. I learn best by seeing and hearing what I am learning. I also like writing things down in my notebook. also helps me too. I also learn by listening to music at home. I like having mentors to help me too. I had one of my best friends help with one of my assignments for my other class. , which was very helpful too. I need copy of notes from mentors it helps me by knowing what we talked about in class.
I learned from my last semester that I like quite rooms when taking exams and when I see and hear it best. I did good on my final exam having a mentor read the questions to me really helped. Sitting in the front of the classroom helps me too. I also got copy of notes from my mentor which helped me a lot too. I liked how the professor ran the class last semester. she knew what we were talking about in class and what topic we were talking about.
I hope to do good this semester as well.

    1. Describe what you learning needs are? I learn best by seeing and hearing what I am learning. I also like writing things down in my notebook also helps me too. I also learn by listening to music at home. I like having mentors to help me too. I had my friend help me with one of my journal assignment for one of my classes, which was very helpful to me. Describe what you learned from your past classes? I learned from my past classes last semester that I learn best by seeing and hearing it best. I also learned by being in a quiet room when taking my exams. It also helps when I have someone read the questions on the exam because I understand them better that way. I did good last semester in my class and on my final exam . I know having a mentor in class really helped me a lot.Sitting in the front worked for me because I could see what we working on. I also got copy of the notes from my mentor which helped a lot.
everything I did and tried did work. I liked how my professor ran the class because she knew what we talking about and where we left off in the text book. I didn't like using a textbook because we didn't use it in class .

  3. I believe that we can all adapt to any instructional style. Our learning preferences are just that, preferences. Just because we prefer to learn a certain way does not mean we cannot learn another way. I think that the only people who need certain types of learning are the ones who have a learning disability or ones who have a visual or hearing impairment. I have had to adapt in my Math class. I prefer any type of visual instruction. My Math professor talks a lot and goes really while she is teaching us and sometimes I miss the point. What I do is write down the answer and the steps she took to get there, then try and figure it out for myself. If that didn't work, then I'll make a note of it and ask her to please clarify some of the things I did not understand. When preparing for a test in Math, I tend to concentrate on the problems I had most issues with. I will do as many examples as I can. Doing the examples helps me remember the steps better for my tests. In my writing class its much easier for me. I can usually retain most of the things I read since I prefer the visual learning. I try and take notes on things I feel may be important. We have not taken a test in that class so its more of understanding and analyzing what we have to read so that we can then discuss in the class as a group.

  4. I believe that I learn best through kinetic means as opposed to any other method. Personally, when things are hands-on, or when I have the opportunity to move around for an assignment, demonstration, or project, I'm able to retain information more reliably and thoroughly. When I look back to see what I've learned, motions with my body typically remind me of what exactly it was. My math professor last semester had an unorthodox teaching style. It was more visually orientated which is difficult for me. I, however, was able to adapt by realizing that writing information down helps me to retain information as well. It's also a great organizational thing that I'm able to look back onto my notes. The class was also slightly loud at times, which doesn't impact me too heavily because I enjoy group assignments, but sometimes it becomes to overwhelming when I need to focus on something I'm not quite understanding.

  5. i think i learn best through visually seeing it and as well as if i write things down i tend to remember them better. i don't think their is a way to learn that everyone has to have. every person is different and everyone learns differently. their are some people who learn better with hands on others learn better through read. you cant force a person to learn through a way that they don't understand.i haven't had to change a lot with my learning style as long as i'm paying attention and taking important notes.

  6. While reviewing my learning style questionnaire, I found I had “scored” higher in the visual and kinesthetic styles. Personally, I relate more to the visual approach opposed to the kinesthetic. I have found I learn better when there is a visual or something I can visualize as a memory aid. I prefer writing responses and taking notes. My memory is slightly photographic so it is easy for me to recall information.

While in college, I prefer to take a lot of notes during lectures. It keeps me engaged and helps me when I am trying to recall information. When I have completed more increasingly difficult assignments as the semester progressed, I have found my best learning approach is to completely immerse myself in the topic. This semester my assignments were generally essay and response based, which is a format I prefer to express my understanding. I have found when I can somewhat freely choose an essay topic, I choose one that interests me.

In one particular class this semester, one of my professors was generally vague when giving assignments and presenting information. Nobody in the class was ever engaged or seemed to care about the lecture. I continually kept myself focused and asked questions to try and grasp a better understanding. I believe my hands on approach is what has kept me successful in this class.

  7. I have learned that I learn best when I can view an example and or a outline of how its suppose to be written or done. For example I learned that I in any math class ( my biggest weakness by far ) my best way to learn and understand is by seeing an example. and whenever any of my professors or teachers have not done this I always try to ask a class mate or even one of my teachers or professors .
